What They Say About Nancy Samalin

"Samalin's wonderfully wise book belies the notion that children don't come with an instruction manual. This is it! Her practical advice on setting loving limits takes parents well beyond discipline and provides lasting lessons in raising caring, confident kids."

—Ann Pleshette Murphy, former editor-in-chief, Parents Magazine

"I was impressed not only by the wealth of information in the book but by the empathy and respect that Nancy conveys towards parents. I highly recommend 'Loving Without Spoiling' for parents as well as all other adults involved with children."
—Dr. Robert Brooks, clinical psychologist, Harvard Medical School; author, "Raising Resilient Children"

"Read it from cover to cover or flip through it to find help with your problem-du-jour. Either way, these warmly-shared words of advice will enrich your life was well as your parenting skills."
—Vicky Lansky, author of "Feed Me I'm Yours," " Games Babies Play", and "Practical Parenting Tips"

"A wonderful resource full of effective ways to minimize the stresses of parenthood and raise happy, unspoiled children."
— Jack Canfield, Co-author, "Chicken Soup for the Parent's Soul"

Marblehead Parent Survey on Youth, Tobacco, Alcohol and
Other Drug Use
"Is Your Perception of Kids' Drug and Alcohol Use their REALITY?
Tell us what you think --- It Really Matters!"

October 22 through November 16

In partnership with the Northeast Center for Healthy Communities (NCHC), TeamUp will conduct Marblehead's first-ever survey of parental attitudes and perceptions about youth tobacco, alcohol and other drug use.

The anonymous survey of parents in grades 6-12 will be analyzed to identify community beliefs about youth substance use. Results will also be compared to the outcome of the 2007 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) conducted in April 2007 by the Marblehead Public Schools. The survey results will enable TeamUp and community partners to build a long-term strategy for providing education and outreach to better address youth alcohol and other drug use.

Questions on the survey will cover topics such as:

  • Sources where youth obtain alcohol and other drugs
  • Parent and child discussions about alcohol and other drug use
  • Community norms about alcohol and other drug use

The anonymous survey will be conducted online. Paper copies will be available in all grade 6-12 Marblehead schools, Abbot Public Library, and the Superintendent's Office. The survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete.
